Private 4-Day Isle of Mull Tour from Edinburgh or Glasgow
Adventure Alba's Private 4-Day Isle of Mull Tour is a private, driver-guided trip for your group only (max 8 guests), starting and finishing in Edinburgh or Glasgow, taking in Glencoe, Tobermory, Iona, an optional cruise to Staffa and Inveraray over 4 days and 3 nights. Adventure Alba has run private tours across Scotland since 2018, with most trips starting in Edinburgh. Three vehicle ferry crossings and a night on the island give you time to see Mull properly, and we plan each day around the sailings.

What does the 4-day Isle of Mull itinerary cover?
Day 1 heads north via the Kelpies, Callander and Glencoe to Fort William. Day 2 crosses by ferry to Mull for Tobermory. Day 3 visits Iona, with an optional cruise to Staffa, then takes the ferry to Oban. Day 4 comes home by a viewpoint over Kilchurn Castle, Inveraray and Loch Lomond.
Day 1: Edinburgh or Glasgow to Fort William via the Kelpies & Glencoe
The Kelpies, Highland cows at Kilmahog and Glencoe on the way to Fort William.
Overnight: Fort William

Day 1 takes you from your hotel or the airport past the Kelpies and through Callander and Glencoe to Fort William for the night. The Kelpies are the giant steel horse heads by Falkirk, and a good first photo stop.
Next you can choose between Doune Castle, which you might know from Outlander or Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and the Deanston distillery. Both are optional. Fans can see more on our Outlander day tour. We have lunch in Callander, then meet the Highland cows at Kilmahog.
After that comes Glencoe, a steep, dramatic glen. You finish in Fort William, at the foot of Ben Nevis.
Day 2: Fort William to the Isle of Mull
A ferry to Mull, Tobermory harbour and the famous Isle of Mull cheese shop.
Overnight: Isle of Mull

Day 2 leaves Fort William, crosses Loch Linnhe on the Corran Ferry and takes a second ferry to the Isle of Mull, then explores Tobermory and the island, with the night on Mull. Ferry times fix part of the day, so we plan around them.
If you'd like to see the Glenfinnan Viaduct first, the railway bridge from the Harry Potter films, we can fit it in. It's optional, and it means taking the Tobermory ferry from Kilchoan. Otherwise we take the main crossing, from Lochaline to Fishnish.
On Mull, Tobermory has colourful houses along the harbour front, and you can call in at the famous Isle of Mull cheese shop. If the ferry times allow, there's room for more stops.
Day 3: Isle of Mull, Iona & Staffa to Oban
Iona Abbey, an optional cruise to Staffa and the ferry to Oban.
Overnight: Oban

Day 3 starts with a scenic drive across Mull to Fionnphort, for an optional cruise to Staffa and a visit to Iona, then back to Craignure and the ferry to Oban for the night.
The cruise to Staffa is an optional extra, paid separately and weather allowing. The island is known for its basalt columns and Fingal's Cave. Puffins are seasonal, but we can't promise you'll see one, and the boat and the weather decide the visit.
Then it's across to Iona and Iona Abbey, one of the oldest Christian sites in Scotland. Abbey entry is paid separately. After that we drive on to Craignure for the ferry to Oban, known for its seafood.
Day 4: Oban to Edinburgh or Glasgow via Loch Awe, Inveraray & Loch Lomond
Loch Awe, Inveraray and Loch Lomond on the way home.
Drop-off in Edinburgh or Glasgow

Day 4 heads back from Oban via St Conan's Kirk, a viewpoint over Kilchurn Castle on Loch Awe, Inveraray and Loch Lomond to your drop-off in Edinburgh or Glasgow. St Conan's Kirk is an unusual old church by Loch Awe. A little further along the shore, a roadside viewpoint looks over the ruined Kilchurn Castle, and you can walk down to the water for a closer look.
Then comes Inveraray on Loch Fyne and Loch Lomond, where the village of Luss is a good place to stretch your legs. There's time for more sights if you'd like them.
Can we customise the 4-day Isle of Mull itinerary?
Yes, and most groups do. Think of this route as a starting point we'll adjust around what you'd like to see.
Ideas and other options

Want more time?
Add one day for more time on Mull, or three days to take in the Isle of Skye. Our 5-day Highlands & Isle of Skye tour shows how Skye fits in, and either works as a custom tour. For something shorter, try our 3-day Highlands tour or our 2-day Loch Ness tour.

A few words from people who've travelled with us.
Why choose a private Isle of Mull tour?
Coach tours run to a timetable. A private tour runs to yours, even when the ferries set part of the day.
Just your group, max 8 guests
It's only you, your own vehicle and your driver-guide, with no strangers on board. Bigger party? Larger groups are possible with a bigger vehicle.
Flexible days, your pace
The ferries fix part of Days 2 and 3, and we plan the rest around them. Fancy longer in Tobermory or at Glencoe? We stay when the sailings allow.
Ideal for families, friends and couples
- Families: plenty of breaks, ferry crossings children enjoy and the Highland cows at Kilmahog.
- Friends: time for a distillery, a coastal walk or a good dinner in Oban.
- Couples: quieter viewpoints, island evenings and no rush to move on.
Frequently asked questions
Is 4 days enough for the Isle of Mull?
Yes. Four days gives you a night on the island and time for Iona and an optional Staffa cruise. Adventure Alba's private 4-day tour reaches Fort William on day one, Mull on day two and Iona on day three, and heads home via Inveraray on day four. For more time on the island, add a day.
Should we drive ourselves or take a private tour of the Isle of Mull?
You can drive yourself, but your car needs a place on each ferry, and many roads on Mull are single-track with passing places. On a private tour, max 8 guests as standard, your driver-guide handles the driving, ferries and parking, so everyone can enjoy Tobermory, Iona and Staffa.
How do the ferries work on the Isle of Mull tour?
We use three crossings. On day two, the Corran Ferry crosses Loch Linnhe, then CalMac's Lochaline to Fishnish ferry takes you to Mull, or Kilchoan to Tobermory if you go via the Glenfinnan Viaduct. On day three, CalMac's Craignure to Oban ferry brings you back to the mainland. Ferries aren't included in the tour price.
Is the Staffa cruise worth it, and will we see puffins?
It's optional, and worth considering if you'd like to see Fingal's Cave and the basalt columns. Puffins are around Staffa from April to early August, but we can't promise you'll see any, and the boat and the weather decide whether and how you land.
When is the best time to visit the Isle of Mull?
April to October is the best time to visit the Isle of Mull. The school holidays get very busy, so book early. The tour runs in winter, but almost everything on Mull is closed out of season and the Iona ferries can be tricky on Sundays. We can always make a Sunday work.
Is a 4-day Isle of Mull tour suitable for kids and older travellers?
Yes. Because the tour is private, we can plan more breaks and stops children love, like the Highland cows at Kilmahog. The Staffa cruise and walking are always optional, and the tour suits most abilities, though our vehicles don't have a wheelchair lift.
Where do we stay on a 4-day Isle of Mull tour?
On this 4-day tour you spend the first night in Fort William, the second on the Isle of Mull and the third in Oban. Accommodation isn't included. We prefer to book it for you, but you're welcome to book your own if you have somewhere in mind.
Does the tour start in Edinburgh or Glasgow?
Either. The 4-day Isle of Mull tour starts and ends in Edinburgh or Glasgow, with hotel or airport pick-up and drop-off. You can start in one city and finish in the other, and custom tours can also start in Inverness.

Pricing FAQ
How much does a private 4-day Isle of Mull tour cost?
Adventure Alba prices private tours per group, not per person: around £1,000 to £1,200 per day for your whole party of up to 8 guests, with summer dates at the top of the range. That covers your vehicle, driver-guide, fuel and parking. Hotels, meals, ferries and entry tickets are extra.
How much are the ferries?
Ferries aren't included in the tour price. As an estimate, expect around £100 for the CalMac ferries over the whole trip, depending on the number of passengers. That covers the Lochaline to Fishnish crossing on day two and Craignure to Oban on day three, for a vehicle up to 6 metres. The Corran Ferry is extra. Prices change, so we'll confirm when we quote.
What isn't included in the price?
Hotels, meals, ferries (including the Corran Ferry), the Staffa cruise, the Iona ferry, Iona Abbey entry, other entry tickets and personal spending are paid separately. We prefer to book your accommodation for you, but you're welcome to book your own.
Why does the price vary?
Each tour is planned for your group, so the final price depends on your dates, the time of year and any changes you'd like, such as an extra night on Mull.
How do we get an exact quote?
Send us your dates and group size, and we'll reply with a clear quote and no obligation. You can reach us by email or WhatsApp, or start on our custom private tours page.
