What does the 3-day Scottish Highlands itinerary cover?
Day 1 heads north via Pitlochry, Clava Cairns and Culloden to Inverness. Day 2 follows Loch Ness to Glenfinnan, Fort William, Glencoe and Oban. Day 3 comes home by Loch Awe, a viewpoint over Kilchurn Castle, Kilmahog and Doune Castle.
Day 1: Edinburgh or Glasgow to Inverness via Pitlochry & Culloden
Pitlochry, the standing stones at Clava Cairns and Culloden Battlefield.
Overnight: Inverness or Loch Ness.

Day 1 takes you north from Edinburgh or Glasgow through Pitlochry to Clava Cairns and Culloden Battlefield, with the night in Inverness or beside Loch Ness. If you start in Edinburgh, we cross the Firth of Forth on the Queensferry Crossing, and the hills start rising not long after.
Pitlochry is our first Highland stop, a Victorian town that's good for a coffee and a wander. Further north, Clava Cairns is a quiet group of Bronze Age burial cairns and standing stones. A few minutes away is Culloden Battlefield, where the last pitched battle on British soil was fought in 1746. It's a moving place to stand.
Day 2: Loch Ness, Glenfinnan Viaduct, Fort William & Glencoe to Oban
Loch Ness, Ben Nevis views, the Harry Potter viaduct and Glencoe.
Overnight: Oban.

Day 2 runs from Inverness down Loch Ness to the Glenfinnan Viaduct, Fort William and Glencoe, then past Castle Stalker to a night in Oban. The morning starts on the shores of Loch Ness, so keep an eye on the water in case Nessie puts in an appearance.
From the loch we head west to the Glenfinnan Viaduct, the sweeping railway bridge from the Harry Potter films, with a loch and mountains behind it. Next is Fort William, sitting beneath Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK. After that it's Glencoe. Down on the coast, Castle Stalker is a much-photographed castle on its own islet in Loch Laich. You'll spend the night in Oban, a lively harbour town known for its seafood.

Day 3: Oban to Edinburgh or Glasgow via Loch Awe & Doune Castle
Loch Awe, Highland cows and Doune Castle on the way home.
Drop-off in Edinburgh or Glasgow.

Day 3 heads back from Oban via St Conan's Kirk, a viewpoint over Kilchurn Castle on Loch Awe, the Highland cows at Kilmahog and Doune Castle, to your drop-off in Edinburgh or Glasgow. St Conan's Kirk is an unusual and lovely old church by the loch. A little further along the shore, a roadside viewpoint looks over the ruined Kilchurn Castle, and you can walk down to the water for a closer look.
At Kilmahog you can get up close to the Highland cattle for photos. After the town of Callander we finish at Doune Castle, which you might know from Outlander, Game of Thrones or Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Fans can see more on our Outlander day tour.
Can we customise the 3-day Highlands itinerary?
Yes, and most groups do. Think of this route as a starting point we'll adjust around what you'd like to see.
Ideas and other options
- A whisky distillery stop
- A longer walk, or an extra castle
- More time at Loch Ness or Glencoe
- The Jacobite steam train in season (it books up early)
- Shorter days and more breaks for younger children
We can also change where you start and finish. For a shorter trip, see our 2-day Loch Ness itinerary, or plan from scratch with our fully custom private tour.
Want more time?
Got more time? Our 5-day Highlands & Isle of Skye tour adds Eilean Donan Castle and a full day on Skye. We can also stretch this route to a slower 4 days. Either works as a custom tour.
Or choose one of our longer tours:

Why choose a private Highlands tour?
Coach tours run to a timetable. A private tour runs to yours.
Just your group, max 8 guests
It's only you, your own vehicle and your driver-guide, with no strangers on board. Bigger party? Larger groups are possible with a bigger vehicle.
Flexible days, your pace
Fancy longer at Culloden or a second look at Glencoe? We stay. If the weather turns, we swap the order around and head for the drier side of the hills.
Ideal for families, friends and couples
- Families: shorter stretches in the car, plenty of breaks and the Highland cows at Kilmahog.
- Friends: time for a distillery, a long lunch in Oban or a pint in the evening.
- Couples: quieter viewpoints and no rush to move on.
Frequently asked questions
Is 3 days enough for the Scottish Highlands?
Yes, three days is enough for a first visit to the Scottish Highlands if the route stays focused. Adventure Alba's private 3-day tour covers Pitlochry, Culloden, Loch Ness, Glenfinnan, Glencoe and Oban, with nights in Inverness and Oban. The Isle of Skye needs more time.
Can you see Loch Ness, Glencoe and Glenfinnan in 3 days?
Yes, comfortably. Day 1 heads north from Edinburgh or Glasgow via Pitlochry and Culloden to Inverness. Day 2 follows Loch Ness to the Glenfinnan Viaduct, Fort William and Glencoe before a night in Oban. Day 3 comes home via a roadside viewpoint over Kilchurn Castle on Loch Awe, then Doune Castle.
Should we spend 3 days in the Highlands or go to the Isle of Skye?
With three days, choose the Highlands loop. Skye is a long way from Edinburgh, so a 3-day Skye trip spends a lot of it in the car. If Skye matters most, our 5-day Highlands & Isle of Skye tour gives it a full day.
Should we drive ourselves or take a private tour of the Highlands?
You can drive yourself, but Highland roads are often narrow and winding, some are single-track, and the driver misses the views. On a private tour, max 8 guests as standard, your driver-guide handles the driving and parking and plans each day around the weather.
When is the best time to visit the Scottish Highlands?
March to October is the best time to visit the Scottish Highlands on this route, which stays on the mainland and doesn't go to Skye. The school holidays get very busy, so book early. The tour runs in winter too, though some stops may change with the short daylight hours.
Is a 3-day Highlands tour suitable for kids and older travellers?
Yes. Because the tour is private, we can plan shorter drives, more breaks and stops children love, like the Highland cows at Kilmahog. Walking is always optional, and the tour suits most abilities, though our vehicles don't have a wheelchair lift.
Where do we stay on a 3-day Highlands tour?
You spend the first night in Inverness or on the shores of Loch Ness, and the second in the harbour town of Oban. Accommodation isn't included. We prefer to book it for you, from cosy guesthouses to smart hotels, but you're welcome to book your own.
Does the tour start in Edinburgh or Glasgow?
Either. The 3-day Highlands tour starts and ends in Edinburgh or Glasgow, with hotel or airport pick-up and drop-off. You can start in one city and finish in the other, and custom tours can also start in Inverness. The Highland part of the route is the same whichever city you choose.

Pricing FAQ
How much does a private 3-day Highlands tour cost?
Adventure Alba prices private tours per group, not per person: around £1,000 to £1,200 per day for your whole party of up to 8 guests, with summer dates at the top of the range. That covers your vehicle, driver-guide, fuel and parking. Hotels, meals and entry tickets are extra.
What isn't included in the price?
Hotels, meals, entry tickets and personal spending are paid separately. We prefer to book your accommodation for you, from friendly guesthouses to smart hotels in Inverness and Oban, but you're welcome to book your own.
Why does the price vary?
Each tour is planned for your group, so the final price depends on your dates, the time of year and any changes you'd like, such as an extra night or a distillery stop.
How do we get an exact quote?
Send us your dates and group size, and we'll reply with a clear quote and no obligation. You can reach us by email, or WhatsApp, or start on our custom private tours page.
