What does the 2-day Loch Ness itinerary cover?

Day 1 heads north via Pitlochry, the Cairngorms and Culloden to Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle. Day 2 goes west to Fort William and Glencoe, then south via Kilmahog and Doune Castle.

Day 1: Edinburgh or Glasgow to Loch Ness via Pitlochry & the Cairngorms

Pitlochry, the Cairngorms, Culloden and Urquhart Castle above Loch Ness.

Overnight: Fort Augustus, Invergarry or Inverness

Urquhart Castle on its headland above Loch Ness

Day 1 takes you from your hotel or the airport north into the Highlands, through Pitlochry, the Cairngorms and Culloden to Loch Ness, where you spend the night. If you start in Edinburgh, we cross the Firth of Forth on the Queensferry Crossing, and the hills start rising not long after. Starting from Glasgow, you'd potentially miss the crossing.

Pitlochry is our first proper Highland stop, a Victorian town that's good for a coffee and a wander. Then we carry on through the Cairngorms. If you'd like some time in the mountains, say by Loch Morlich or on a short walk, that's easy to fit in. Further north is Culloden Battlefield, where the last pitched battle on British soil was fought in 1746. It's a moving place to stand.

By late afternoon you reach Loch Ness, where Urquhart Castle sits on its headland above the water. Going inside is up to you. Some guests love exploring the ruins and the view from the walls, while others would rather stay by the shore and spend the time on the loch itself.

You choose where to stay. Fort Augustus, at the southern end of the loch, is ideal if you'd like to wake up by the water. Invergarry, a little way along the glen, is the one for a night that feels a bit different. Ask us about it. Inverness suits you best if you're after good restaurants and an evening in town.

Day 2: Loch Ness, Fort William & Glencoe back to Edinburgh or Glasgow

Ben Nevis, Glencoe, Highland cows and Doune Castle on the way south.

Drop-off in Edinburgh or Glasgow

The road winding through the mountains of Glencoe

Day 2 starts around Loch Ness, then heads west through Fort William and Glencoe and south via Kilmahog and Doune Castle, to your drop-off in Edinburgh, Glasgow or at the airport. We spend the morning by the loch, so keep an eye on the water in case Nessie puts in an appearance.

From there we head west to Fort William, which sits at the foot of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK. The road then runs on through Glencoe, a steep, dramatic glen that plenty of guests say is the best part of the trip.

Heading south, there's time to meet the Highland cows at Kilmahog. We finish at Doune Castle, which you might know from Outlander, Game of Thrones or Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Fans can see more on our Outlander day tour.

Can we customise the 2-day Loch Ness itinerary?

Yes, and most groups do. Think of this route as a starting point we'll adjust around what you'd like to see.

Ideas and other options

  • A walk by Loch Morlich or somewhere quieter in the Cairngorms
  • Time inside Urquhart Castle, or an extra castle
  • A whisky distillery stop
  • A museum or a favourite viewpoint
  • Shorter days and more breaks for younger children

We can also change where you start and finish. With only two days, some things will have to wait, so for a slower pace see our 3-day Highlands tour, or plan from scratch with our fully custom private tour.

Want more time?

Short on time, but could spare one more day? Our 3-day Highlands tour slows the pace and adds the Glenfinnan Viaduct, Castle Stalker and a night in Oban. For even longer, our 5-day Highlands & Isle of Skye tour adds Eilean Donan Castle and a full day on Skye. Either works as a custom tour too.

Why choose a private Loch Ness tour?

Coach tours run to a timetable. A private tour runs to yours.

Just your group, max 8 guests

It's only you, your own vehicle and your driver-guide, with no strangers on board. Bigger party? Larger groups are possible with a bigger vehicle.

Flexible days, your pace

Fancy longer at Urquhart Castle or a second look at Glencoe? We stay. If the weather turns, we swap the order around and head for the drier side of the hills.

Ideal for families, friends and couples

  • Families: shorter stretches in the car, plenty of breaks and the Highland cows at Kilmahog.
  • Friends: time for a distillery, a walk by the loch or a good dinner in Inverness.
  • Couples: quieter viewpoints and no rush to move on.
  • Weekend breaks: in Scotland for work and keen to see the Highlands? Two days fits neatly around the week.

Frequently asked questions

Is 2 days enough to see Loch Ness?

Yes. Two days gives you real time at Loch Ness without asking for a whole week. Adventure Alba's private 2-day tour goes north to the loch and Urquhart Castle on day one, then back via Fort William, Glencoe and Doune Castle on day two. For a slower pace, add a third day.

What will we see on a 2-day Loch Ness tour?

Day 1 takes in Pitlochry, the Cairngorms, Culloden and Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness, with a night by the loch or in Inverness. Day 2 passes Fort William beneath Ben Nevis, then Glencoe, the Highland cows at Kilmahog and Doune Castle. Walks, castles and distillery stops can be added.

Can we visit Loch Ness from Edinburgh or Glasgow?

Yes. Our private 2-day tour starts in Edinburgh or Glasgow, and each day is a full touring day, starting around 9am and finishing around 5 or 6pm. Day one heads north through Pitlochry, the Cairngorms and Culloden, with time to stop along the way rather than a dash to the loch.

Should we take a private tour or a coach tour to Loch Ness?

A coach tour runs to a fixed timetable with a full bus. On a private tour, max 8 guests as standard, it's just your group, and your driver-guide handles the driving and parking and plans each day around you and the weather. You choose where to stop, and for how long.

When is the best time to visit Loch Ness?

Early March to late October is the best time to visit Loch Ness on this tour. The school holidays get very busy, so book early if you're travelling then. The tour runs in winter too, though some stops may change with the short daylight hours. The weather changes quickly in any season, so we plan each day around the forecast.

Is a 2-day Loch Ness tour suitable for kids and older travellers?

Yes. Because the tour is private, we can plan shorter drives, more breaks and stops children love, like the Highland cows at Kilmahog. Going inside Urquhart Castle and walking are always optional, and the tour suits most abilities, though our vehicles don't have a wheelchair lift.

Where do we stay on a 2-day Loch Ness tour?

You spend the night at Loch Ness: in Fort Augustus at the southern end of the loch, in Invergarry, or in Inverness. Accommodation isn't included. We prefer to book it for you, but you're welcome to book your own.

Does the tour start in Edinburgh or Glasgow?

Either. The 2-day Loch Ness tour starts and ends in Edinburgh or Glasgow, with hotel or airport pick-up and drop-off. You can start in one city and finish in the other, and custom tours can also start in Inverness. Starting from Glasgow, you'd potentially miss the Queensferry Crossing on day one.

Pricing FAQ

How much does a private 2-day Loch Ness tour cost?

Adventure Alba prices private tours per group, not per person: around £1,000 to £1,200 per day for your whole party of up to 8 guests, with summer dates at the top of the range. That covers your vehicle, driver-guide, fuel and parking. Hotels, meals and entry tickets are extra.

What isn't included in the price?

Hotels, meals, entry tickets and personal spending are paid separately. We prefer to book your accommodation for you, from friendly guesthouses to smart hotels around Loch Ness and Inverness, but you're welcome to book your own.

Why does the price vary?

Each tour is planned for your group, so the final price depends on your dates, the time of year and any changes you'd like, such as an extra night or a distillery stop.

How do we get an exact quote?

Send us your dates and group size, and we'll reply with a clear quote and no obligation. You can reach us by email or WhatsApp, or start on our custom private tours page.
